From a One-Off Collaboration to a Living Musical Organism

Apnea Ansámbl began as a one-time idea that simply refused to end. We originally came together for a single concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of Apnea (2015), the landmark album by Koonda Holaa. What was meant to be a one-night celebration quickly evolved into a living musical organism that demanded a life of its own. Of the original thirteen musicians, eight continue the journey today.

The project was initiated by members of the /|\ Anabasis collective, who wanted to revisit Apnea and give it a new voice. The result is a reimagined chamber version of the album, expanded with a distinctive brass section and a broader ensemble. Music that once existed in a single form was dismantled, rebuilt, and transformed through new voices, new colours, and new energy.

A Premiere at the Alternativa Festival

Our first major performance took place in November 2025 at Studio Hrdinů as part of the Alternativa Festival. It was there that we realized this wasn't just a one-off collaboration—it had become a project with its own identity and future.

Apnea Ansámbl brings together musicians from different generations and musical backgrounds. Electronic music, hardcore, contemporary jazz, swing, post-rock, and the dark psychedelic Americana of Koonda Holaa merge into a unique sound. That diversity creates the tension, richness, and unexpected energy that drive the ensemble forward.

What's Next?

We're ready for the next chapter. Alongside our first European tour through France, Switzerland, and Germany, we're releasing Bread of Fresh Hair, an album featuring both studio and live recordings of the project.

Your Support Will Help Us

  • release the album on vinyl and CD,
  • cover mixing, mastering, artwork, and manufacturing,
  • finance transportation, accommodation, and essential tour expenses.

Apnea Ansámbl was born from enthusiasm, collaboration, and a desire to make music differently. If you're drawn to genre-defying projects, rich chamber arrangements, and music created through shared energy, we'd be deeply grateful for your support.
