What is this campaign about?
We are publishing a special English-language edition of 'A Hero of Our Time' as a paperback, eBook, and audiobook this summer. We are offering a range of rewards to fund printing of paperback books and to produce an audiobook.
Our special edition has been graded at the intermediate plus level (B1+/B2) for English-language students in the Czech Republic. The book includes an appendix with 250+ words translated from English to Czech.
This special edition contains 15 incredibly rich, historically-accurate and detailed black-and-white illustrations which will transport you to the middle of the nineteenth century. The illustrations by Czech artist Olga Cermanova include:
- an accurate map of the Caucasus in the mid-nineteenth century;
- detailed portraits of characters: Pechorin, Princess Mary, Grushnitsky, Karagyoz the horse;
- army ranks (from soldier to general);
- a duelling pistol;
- panorama of the Caucasus showing geographical features;
- many other smaller details in the book for you to explore...
What is A Hero of Our Time about?
A Hero of Our Time is a psychological portrait of a young army officer called Pechorin.
You will follow him in five different environments. In each place you will learn about his exploits and his character from different people or from his own diary. Is he really a hero, is he a victim of circumstance, or is he a villain?
Our special edition of A Hero of Our Time has been tested by Czech students in the last six months. Feedback from students has been positive, with the new style of illustrations helping students learn words more easily.
First published in 1840, this classic nineteenth-century novel by Mikhail Lermontov is set in the Caucasus region in a time of war.
Who are we?
Three Thrushes creates beautiful books for English-language students.
We specialise in the intermediate segment (B1-B2), however our books are enjoyed by advanced students at the C1 level and above.
A Hero of Our Time is the second novel we are publishing. In 2021 we published George Orwell's Animal Farm, thanks to your support of a Hithit campaign last summer.
Creating a Three Thrushes book takes about one year. It takes hundreds of hours to work on the copy (abridging, translating, developing the appendix), designing the artistic concept and illustrations, and testing the manuscript and artwork with students.
